Between Beltane and the First Harvest...
Summer Solstice: Wednesday, June 20, 2012

By Kate Braun / The Rag Blog / June 13, 2012
“In the summertime when all the trees and leaves are green....”
Wednesday, June 20, 2012, is the Summer Solstice, also called Litha and Midsummer. The Summer Solstice marks the mid-point between Beltane and the first harvest festival, hence the term Midsummer. Lady Moon is in her first quarter, in the water sign Cancer. The Goddess is now a matron and ripely pregnant, foreshadowing the coming harvest. Wednesday is Odin’s day, implying that fathering, generative, paternal energies will also abound.

Midsummer lore says that any herbs gathered or harvested on this day are exceptionally potent. The general rule for harvesting herbs is to do so before 10 a.m., while the essential oils in the plants are more abundant.

Choose among the colors white, red, golden yellow, green, blue, and tan for your decorating. Serve your guests any yellow or orange food such as summer squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, bananas, peaches, oranges, lemons. Foods cooked over flames are also welcome: shish-kebab, grilled veggies, grilled salmon or other fish, grilled meats. Ale, mead, and fresh fruit juice are traditional libations, as are lemonade and sangria.

Plan your festivities to celebrate vitality, creativity, health, and abundance. Celebrate all things in your life, work and play equally. Make magick for love, healing, and prosperity. Rejoice in creation and creativity in all forms.

Include your animals in your festivities. Fairies and garden sprites will be pleased if you set out some food for them. You may also leave bits of mirror or crystal about to reflect light, which pleases these beings. Remember that part of this celebration is to not give away fire or food, and to not sleep away from home.

Make a fire if possible. Any fire will do, from a big bonfire to flames in a small cauldron. Any amulets that have lost their usefulness and/or fulfilled their purpose should be destroyed by casting them into the fire. When the ashes cool, strew them across your yard. This is said to bring blessings to the land.

First quarter moons are a good time to begin projects, to declare intentions to be completed by the full moon. It may be helpful to create a self-dedication ceremony to fix your intentions more firmly in your heart and mind. One way to do this is to speak your intention or define your project to the flickering flames, speaking across the flames to each of the equinox and solstice compass points, East, South, West, and North.

The balance shifts from the Waxing Year to the Waning Year. This cycle of abundance leads to “the time that is no time” when fields lie fallow and there is time to reflect and renew before the next movement of the Great Dance begins. The Summer Solstice marks mid-year as well as mid-summer.

Kate Braun : Summer Solstice is Festival of Light and Energy

A festival of light and energy:
Summer Solstice: Tuesday, June 21, 2011
“In the daytime hiding ‘mongst the dewy blade of grass but when it’s night, firefly’s lantern burns bright...”
By Kate Braun / The Rag Blog / June 15, 2011

Tuesday, June 21, 2011, is the quarter celebration Litha, Midsummer, the Summer Solstice. Lord Sun enters the sign of Cancer on this date and Lady Moon is in her third quarter, in Pisces. Balance is shifting as once again the Oak and Holly Kings execute their ritual dance or battle. The Holly King, lord of the waning year, emerges triumphant.

From this date to the Winter Solstice we shall notice the days getting steadily shorter as Lord Sun’s power gradually wanes. Remember that light and darkness are not about good and evil but about the natural balance of Planet Earth. Just as we need activity, we also need rest; and so does Mother Earth.

This is a festival of Light and Energy, fertility and abundance, creativity and vitality. The Goddess is now a matron, ripe with pregnancy. If possible, celebrate outdoors and have a fire (unless your area is under a burn ban). If you celebrate indoors, consider burning dried herbs over a charcoal tablet in an iron cauldron. Vervain, St. John’s Wort, lavender, and mistletoe are some of the herbs appropriate to the season. Use a feather to waft the smoke over you and your guests and any pets that are present; it is a ritual blessing.

Use the colors white, red, golden yellow, green, blue, and tan in your decorations and adornment. In addition to color, you may decorate with sunflowers, sun wheels, and bunches of fresh herbs tied with a yellow ribbon. Heliotrope is an excellent flower to display, as are lemon flowers and sprigs of saffron, oak, and laurel. The scents of frankincense, galangal, copal, and ylang-ylang would also provide a pleasant accompaniment to your festivities.

Any herbs gathered on this day are said to be exceptionally potent, so look for chamomile, fennel, hemp, lavender, pine, roses, wisteria, stevia, Dittany of Crete, and mugwort.

This is an excellent opportunity to perform a Self-Dedication Ceremony: in advance of your celebrations, take time to consider your past; actions, thoughts, beliefs, and priorities are all subject to re-evaluations and re-evaluations can prompt changes in these areas. Make “before” and “now” lists if it helps you. Pay particular attention to areas where you notice change; this is where you will direct your attention.

At a time you choose on this day, alone or in the midst of your guests, hold your list of what you are changing, then draw an invisible circle around yourself (you may use your finger or a wand or a crystal to do this). Say aloud “I am moving forward” and tear off one item from your list and gently toss it out of your circle. Repeat this action with each item you have chosen. Such an act will redirect your energies toward where you are going, not on where you have been.

Do not forget the fairies, earth sprites, and forest elves in your preparations. Leaving a bit of food and drink outdoors for them will increase their tendency to work for you and protect you and yours. To see fireflies on this night is also auspicious.

I will be participating in a Central Austin Holistic Living Fair on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the Holiday Inn on Town Lake, 20 N. I-35 in Austin, from 10 a.m – 6 p.m. There is a $4 entry fee. Summer Solstice:
Mother Earth's balancing act

By Kate Braun / The Rag Blog / June 21, 2010
“Summer breeze makes me feel fine,
blowin’ thru the jasmine of my mind.”
Monday, June 21, 2010, marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. This season is a time for contemplating the balancing act Mother Earth performs year-round: light brings activity, growth, expansion; dark is for withdrawal, to rest and renew. This year the Summer Solstice comes at the beginning of a week that culminates on Saturday, June 26, 2010, with a Full Mead Moon and a lunar eclipse. Magick will be afoot for the entire week.

This is a fire festival that prohibits sharing fire, so candles would not be good party favors. It is also taboo on this day to sleep away from home (out-of-town guests have a temporary “home” wherever they are staying) and to neglect animals.

Decorate the celebratory area using the colors white, red, golden yellow, green, blue, and tan. Use light blue, green, and yellow candles on your table and altar. Yellow is the color for prosperity, so use lots of this color in all its hues. Sunflowers, seashells, sun wheels, summer fruits and potpourri may be used as you choose to enhance the decor.

Any herbs gathered or harvested on this day are said to be exceptionally potent. You may consider sharing your herbal harvest with your guests: small bunches of herbs tied with a yellow ribbon make lovely party favors. Herbs favored for this celebration include: chamomile, fennel, hemp, lavender, pine, roses, St. John’s Wort, wisteria, verbena.

Create a menu featuring yellow or orange food, fresh fruits (especially lemons and oranges), veggies (especially summer squash), and pumpernickel bread. Flaming foods are also appropriate. Traditionally, ale, mead, and fresh fruit juice, in addition to plenty of water, are the appropriate drinks to provide or ask your guests to bring.

The Goddess is now matron, ripe with pregnancy. This is a time to celebrate vitality, creativity, health, abundance. It is a festival of Light, of energy, of fertility for crops and animals as well as humans, a time to celebrate both work and play.

If you are able to build a fire outdoors, do your best to use some fir and/or oak as they are traditional woods for this season. Throw some herbs onto the fire and, using a feather, waft the smoke about yourself, your guests, and whatever pets may be present. You may use whatever herbs are readily available, but preferred herbs are: mistletoe, vervain, St. John’s Wort, pansy, lavender, mugwort, hemp, thyme, pine.

Pluto is retrograde until mid-September and a Pluto retrograde is a good time to catch up unfinished business; therefore, amulets which have lost their usefulness should be destroyed on this day by casting them into the ceremonial fire. When cool, these ashes should be scattered, an activity which brings blessings to the land.

Field and Forest elves, sprites, and fairies are more present at this time, so be sure to include them in your plans and set out a bit of food and herbs for them.
